An important aim of the Peace Park proposal is to enable the local people to continue to live in the valleys and mountain regions. Visitors are warmly welcomed, especially if they stay in people's homes and use local people as guides.
B3P have been involved in promoting the transformation of Kullas, and other old buildings in the area, into bunk houses and mountaineering huts. Furthermore, we are investigating ways in which the BPPP project can support local people to make money from traditional industries.
The BPP area is a beautiful mountainous region. Consisting,
to a large degree, of Europe's last great wilderness it
has been blessed by being relatively undeveloped by
international tourism. It has, however, long been a tourist
destination for local people and as such there are a few
hotels that international tourists could use. In addition to
these hotels the more adventurous traveller will find that
the local people are generally very friendly and generous and
many will gladly rent rooms in their own houses to
travellers. These rooms are normally provided including meals
and offer tourists a great way to immerse themselves in the
local culture.
• Prices for hotels should be around 25 euros ($30) per
night full board.
• You should expect to pay between 16 and 18 euros
($19-21) per night to stay in someone's house.
• For information about staying in a converted Kulla
please contact us or the BPP Information Centre
There are local people who are prepared to act as mountain guides. Prices are negotiable and vary widely depending on the difficulty of the route, the length of the day and the expertise of the guide. As a very vague guide, an easy half days guiding should cost somewhere in the region of 10-15 euros ($12-18).
BRADT Guides are available to both Montenegro and Albania. For more information please visit www.bradt-travelguides.com.
A BLUE Guide is available to Albania and Kosovo/a.
An Eco-guide to Rugova - Kosovo/a has been produced by Dritan Shala of Aquila and the BPPP Coalition. It is available in English.
An Eco-guide to Theth - Albania has been produced by Petrit Imeraj of PFGE and the BPPP Coalition, some of it is in English.
Whilst travelling in the region you will be able to sample some of the local produce. Local industries include honey-making, raki-making cheese-making, baked goods, fresh fruits and vegetables, including wild strawberries and herbs (such as to make mountain tea).
