This is a spectacular area of mountain scenery. The rock is mainly limestone, so that there are fine caves and abundant flora as well as rocky peaks and ridges for serious climbing and scrambling. The higher peaks include Jezerca 2693m in Albania, Gjeravica 2656m in Kosovo/a and Karanfil 2480m on the Montenegrin border. The valleys are steep sided, with dense beech scrub giving way to pine trees at higher levels. The area could be ideal for strenuous trekking on ancient tracks linking villages and valleys. There is skiing development in the Rugova region of Kosovo/a.
In Albania the valleys are wonderful to look at but hard to live in and there has been serious depopulation since the economic crisis of 1997. In Kosovo/a there was a wave of destruction and deforestation during the 1998 - 2000 war and further depopulation.
Rugova - Kosovo/a.
Theth - Albania.
